He rounded off the burning end of his filterless Pall Mall in the ashtray, twirling it between Rugby-mangled fingers. He looked tired. And old. His face wore the weathered lines of relentless anxiety that comes from months of living in a cave, eating MREs, and shitting in a bag. Afghanistan is a vicious, snarling, rabid dog that will chew the heart right out of your chest if you let it. The last time I had seen him was when he rushed me onto a Blackhawk in Herat as we tried to outmaneuver an approaching sandstorm, and I listened to him explain to me how to operate the mounted machine gun in case the gunner got hit. Now, two years later, as we sat at an outdoor table in front of the Bonjour Bakery, thousands of miles away from that horrid place, I listened to him fill in the missing pieces of a story I never really understood.
"Nothing. So anyway, remember that during the Reagan Administration the CIA had been covertly arming, training and financing Osama bin Laden and the Mujahideen in Afghanistan for their fight against the Russians. This was also the same time period when the United States provided billions of dollars in military aid to Saddam Hussein for his fight against the Iranians. Later, those same armaments would be used against American troops when the policies changed. This is beyond insanity. It's like giving a your 5 year old son a loaded weapon to get rid of the annoying kids who won't stay off the front lawn. Then, when you realize your mistake and try to reclaim the weapon, your son starts firing the gun at you. The unfortunate difference here is that the policy makers are not the ones getting killed for their mistakes. The policy makers escape punishment and live to create more bad policies while the brave men and women dedicated to protecting our freedoms pay the price with their lives.
"OK, so during the Clinton years, the iron triangle of the Military Industrial Complex becomes furious with Clinton's soft approach to the perceived threats to America and they begin to finance and internally promote the most influential members of the rising NeoCon revolution. These emerging luminaries then produce something called 'Project for the New American Century', a manifesto drafted and signed by, among others, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Elliot Abrams, Jeb Bush, Scooter Libby, and a guy named Zalmay Khalilzad, an Afghan-American who at the time served as a consultant for UNOCAL determining 'risk analysis' for its proposed pipeline project through Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"Keep in mind that this is during the end of the 90s. The PNAC manifesto is very clear in its assertion that in order for America to remain the most powerful nation on Earth it must gain control of the world's remaining energy reserves which, for the most part, are located in the middle east and central asia.
"Near the end of the document there is a chilling sentence: 'Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor'.
"The war plans for Iraq and Afghanistan are already being drawn up by these guys and Bush isn't even in the White House yet. But the highest ranks of corporate militarism are about to make sure he gets there, and that he's surrounded by the anointed Lords of the PNAC.
"This was not a conspiracy. It was a high profile and deliberate project with domination as its goal, conflict as its method, and patriotism as its cover. But they still needed some kind of Pearl Harbor in order to sell it to the American people.
"Now, according to Former FBI translator turned whistle blower Sibel Edmonds, at the same time that Clinton was talking about how important it was to stop this terrorist named Osama bin Laden, the CIA was using him for operations in central asia. These operations were basically destabilizing efforts that employed al Qaeda as an undercover, proxy wing of the CIA promoting regime change within unfriendly governments surrounding the Caspian Sea.
"In fact, bin Laden was a CIA operative right up until September 11th 2001. He was a very useful tool, a way of outsourcing terrorism and promoting the Islamization of central asia in order to create enemies that would have to be defeated as an ironclad excuse for the annexation of countries with vast energy resources, while reaping astronomical profits from military sales to all sides.
"But bin Laden had nothing to do with 9/11. Check the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List and you will see that he's still wanted for other crimes, but not 9/11. There is no evidence that links him to the events of that day. He was, nonetheless, the perfect fall guy for the operation.
"9/11 was orchestrated by criminal elements within the CIA, ISI and Mossad (using the stolen passports of Saudi nationals as cover) with Black Ops funds that had been laundered through Pakistan with the help of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh. As Dick Cheney ordered NORAD to stand down that day, those in the CIA sympathetic to the PNAC left the necessary doors open and allowed 9/11 to happen in all of its horror because it was exactly the kind of catastrophic and catalyzing event that would justify the mobilization of the Military Industrial Complex for a series of wars against a faceless enemy that could continue indefinitely while a consolidation of energy resources is secured.
"Bin Laden was killed in December 2001. But both sides of the 'war on terror' benefit from the belief that he's still alive. So he stays alive.
"The smoking gun of 9/11 was right in front of everybody's eyes that day. The only way that those 3 buildings could have collapsed so perfectly into their own footprints at free fall speed would have been by controlled demolition using explosives, explosives that would have to have been planted weeks in advance. The real question is, who would most likely have had the resources, the will and, most importantly, the security clearance to pull something like that off?"
Sometimes a magician will tell you how a trick is done and you end up wishing he hadn't.
