Damn Dirty Apes
It's important to keep an eye out for those small news stories in the paper, the ones that need to be read in conjunction with other small news stories, to form a larger picture of what's actually happening. Last month there was the 40 million dollar black-market transaction between Italian arms dealers and the Iraqi government, and that July 31st audit report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
Yesterday The Associated Press reported a meeting on Saturday between North Korea's legislative head of state, Kim Yong Nam, and Syria's Baath Arab Socialist Party director, Saaeed Eleia Dawood, a meeting that took place in North Korea and was described as a "friendly talk" by the North Korean Central News Agency.
OK. Now, last week there was a report from the U.S. State Department about North Korean officials being spotted in Syria at the same time as Syrian officials were seen taking meetings with people who have ties to A.Q.Khan, the world leader in black-market nuclear weapons sales.
Earlier this month, there was a Reuters story about Israeli warplanes invading Syrian airspace in the early morning hours of September 6th and dropping bombs on what Israeli officials believe is a suspected Syrian nuclear production facility.
There was also a report in The Washington Post a week and a half ago about a ship from North Korea arriving in the Syrian port of Tartus carrying what Israeli spooks considered questionable material "labeled as cement."
And as a side note, don't forget when the Israeli military confirmed last summer that they had invaded Syrian airspace and flew fighter jets directly over the palace of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad while he was inside, seemingly just to prove that they could do it.
OK, so Iran has been buying nuclear materials from North Korea for years and is still funneling weapons to Hezbollah through Syria. Syria is now buying nuclear materials from Khan's network with the help of North Korea. Israel, anticipating the tempest coming their way, has decided on a policy of aggressive preemptive intimidation.
And American Christians pray for all this to happen in the sick and demented hope of fulfilling an old fairy tale prophecy.
Where does that leave us? It leaves us somewhere in the prequel to the original Planet of the Apes. I leave you with three quotes..
Cornelius: (reading from the sacred scrolls of the apes) "Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death."
Dr. Zaius : "I have always known about man. From the evidence, I believe his wisdom must walk hand and hand with his idiocy. His emotions must rule his brain. He must be a warlike creature who gives battle to everything around him, even himself."
Taylor: "I'm a seeker too. But my dreams aren't like yours. I can't help thinking that somewhere in the universe there has to be something better than man. Has to be."
